Golfers don't play Titleist they play ProV

There is not lot of golf equipment that is known just by its model number. The exception is the Titleist Pro V1 golf ball. Known by the majority golfers as the "provee" it has become so popular that it should have its own entry in the Oxford Dictionary.

But what makes this premium golf ball such a golfing phenomenon. Probably a natural succession due to the fact that Titleist have been the leaders in the manufacture of golf balls for decades. The Titleist Balata was a proven Tour winner so it makes sense that its latest incarnation would naturally follow suit to become on of the most famous golf balls in golfing history.

Evolution of Titleist Tour Golf Balls

When the Pro V1 hit the shelves back in 2000 it was the start of a golf ball revolution. Before the turn of the millennium the club players choices were extremely limited. Good amateurs would undoubtedly play a Titleist Professional Balata.
The problem with the balata ball is that even in good hands they were only good for maybe a couple of rounds. One miss hit and either the ball would go out of round or it would be smiling back at you. What golfers needed was a ball that would perform well around the greens and be durable enough to withstand the knocks associated with general play by club golfers.

Thankfully the likes of Titleist and Callaway were on the case and in 2000 both companies set the golf world alight with two balls that would revolutionise the game of golf. Callaway launched the Rule 35 and the Titleist Pro V1. Both balls had similar 3 piece construction encompassing a soft feel urethane covering that was both durable but reacted like a balata ball.

As we know Callaway went to be leaders in golf ball design and construction but the original Rule 35 has been super ceded by numerous incarnations with differing names. The Titleist Pro V1 on the other hand will alway be a "provee" in what ever form it takes.

Since its conception 9 years this Tour Premium ball has been improved every 2 years or so. These improvements have been subtle changes to both models but they resulted in golf balls that appeal to players of all standards.

Callaway v Titleist Lawsuit

Last year there was law suit in the US where Callaway claimed that Acushnet had infringed some patents that they owned. This led to a court injunction that in effect stopped Acushnet manufacturing their top performing ball in its present form.

Fortunately Acushnet were quick out of the blocks and made changes to manufacturing process that made the pro v1 outside the scope of the infringing patents. The new 2009 V1x and V1 also conform to the patent issues, so lets hope that's end of that and that Titleist can continue to sell the worlds most popular golf ball in its present form and moniker.
