Pro V1 v Pro V1x

For many years there has been confusion and at times certain myths as to what is the longer ball.

As golf technology has advanced in the last 10 years especially in the driver department, golf ball manufactures have invested heavily in trying to find the optimum ball to suit the launch conditions produced by the new drivers on the market. Bigger head design and thinner faces have produced a higher Coefficient of Restitution (COR) or trampoline effect and the harder ball or the ball with the higher compression will come off faster than a ball with a lower compression.
Because the V1x has a higher compression the ball will be faster off the clubface than the V1, and because the V1x is a lower spinning ball this will also add distance.

For most golfers the Pro V1x is longer off the tee than the Pro V1 due to its higher speed and lower spin rate.
This is even more prominent in players with higher swing speeds because they flex the club head at impact getting a greater trampoline effect and thus a higher ball speed. This is also true with high speed players who also achieve a high spin effect at impact and because the X ball is a low spinning ball this will also have an effect on the distance achieved.

But and this is the big BUT that gets golfers of all levels confused. They seem to think that to get the best out of the Pro V1x ball they need to have a fast swing speed. Well this is just not true. The average swing speed golfer who produces spin on the ball may well benefit from using the Pro v1x over the normal Pro V1 and will achieve longer straighter drives.

So what ball should you play

The type of Pro V ball to have in the bag is just not dependent on how you drive the ball. You have to look at the bigger picture and decide whether your overall game requires a higher or lower spinning ball. In fact you should think backwards from the pin and not forwards from the tee box. Most of the golf shots are played from near the green and this is how you should decide which ball is better suited to your type of game. Because you hit more golf balls into the green than you hit off the tee this should be the deciding overall factor which determines the choice of the higher spinning Pro V1 or the lower spinning Pro V1x.

The best way of finding this out is to spend time on a course that you know and practice the shots that you feel will lower your score. By practicing with both types of ball over a period of time you can fit your self to best Pro V ball that will help in your quest in becoming a better golfer.

Summary differences between the Pro V1 and V1x

Pro V1
•Higher spin rate allows golfers of all standards to get more zip on the ball. But players who tend to impart too much spin may suffer with overall ball control.
•Lower ball compression gives a softer feel especially around the greens

Pro V1x
•Will probably be longer off the tee and when using long irons for most golfers but will help faster swing speed golfers get the most distance.
•Higher ball compression combined with a lower spin rate will give a firmer feel under most conditions and suit the golfer looking to spin the ball less.
